A fabulous original German antique witches ball or Kugel ball.

Heavy glass with foxing, bubbles and swirls in the glass. Original black/green silk ribbon hanger. 

Historically, witch balls were hung in cottage windows in 17th and 18th century England to ward off evil spirits, witches, evil spells, ill fortune and bad spirits. Examples were also seen in shop windows, often not for sale as they were so highly prized.

Smaller witches balls were also hung on Christmas trees in Germany to ward off evil spirits and are believed to be the inspiration for glass baubles.
