These buckets were traditionally used for measuring and transporting rice or other grains in China. They are typically made from hardwood, often elm, with a tapered body constructed from vertical staves and reinforced with metal bands or iron bracing, particularly at the corners and joints. They usually feature an integrated, often carved, arched handle for ease of carrying and structural integrity. While originally utilitarian, these antique buckets are now often repurposed for decorative storage, as planters, or simply displayed as historical artifacts. Many examples found today date back to the late 19th or early 20th century, showcasing rich patina and signs of age and use.
