A rare and historically intriguing antique Victorian japanned tin (toleware) document box bearing an engraved ownership plaque reading:

Dr J. Rusher
280 Chapter

Research indicates that Chapter No. 280 was St. Wulstan's Royal Arch Chapter, Worcester, giving this handsome box a strong probable Masonic association. Acquired alongside a small collection of Masonic items, it is believed to have belonged to a member of the Chapter during the late Victorian or Edwardian period.

Constructed from japanned tinplate, often referred to as toleware, the box retains its original black finish and features a flush carrying handle, lever lock mechanism, and metal-lined interior. Designed for the secure storage of important documents, correspondence, certificates, summonses and records, it is a fine example of the practical office and personal storage used by professionals and fraternal organisations during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The engraved ownership plaque provides a direct personal connection to its former owner, elevating the piece beyond a standard Victorian document box and making it especially appealing to collectors of Masonic memorabilia, Worcestershire history, antique office furnishings and personalised historical objects.

A wonderful and increasingly scarce survivor with genuine historical presence and display appeal.
