Victorian Penny Lick ice cream Glass

This is a lovely Antique Penny Lick Ice Cream Glass which is in good condition with just a little age-related wear but no chips, cracks or restoration and measures approximately 

H8.5cm Diameter at base 5cm.

A penny lick was a small glass used by street vendors for serving ice cream at a cost of one penny per serving. The customer would lick clean the glass and return it to the vendor, who would reuse it.

They were often extremely shallow to improve the profits of the vendor so they were essentially illusion glasses; extremely heavy bottomed with not much volume for the actual ice cream itself. 

A great piece of social history.
