A fascinating vintage theatrical costume design print depicting Doll Tearsheet from Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part II, after an original costume study by the celebrated theatre designer Desmond Heeley.
The artwork portrays the character seated with a tankard in hand, rendered in Heeley’s distinctive expressive style with loose brushwork and rich earthy tones. Handwritten annotations identify the play, character and actress Frances Hyland, one of Canada’s most acclaimed Shakespearean performers and a leading figure of the Stratford Festival.
Signed and dated “Heeley ’65” within the image, this print reproduces an original 1965 costume design created for a Shakespearean stage production. Presented in its original black and gilt frame behind glass, it offers a wonderful glimpse into mid-century theatre design and Shakespearean performance history.
A highly decorative and unusual piece that will appeal to collectors of theatre memorabilia, Shakespeareana, costume design, and mid-century wall art.
